Product Description

Rossa Monza Spider...Smoother Roll!

To increase the Monza Spider's forgiveness, a steel wire-frame allows increased weight at the perimeter, adding stability on mis-hits that helps the putterhead resist twisting when impact is made toward the heel or toe. A light and strong aluminum core allows more weight to be positioned on the perimeter, increasing MOI, and Monza Spider's "wings," into which Movable Weight Technology (MWT) cartridges are inserted, allow substantial weight to be concentrated in areas far from the face, helping to move the CG rearward, which increases MOI and stability.

This putter is great for people who have a hard time aligning putts. The weight is a little heavy and it seems kinda bulky at 1st but it gets the ball rolling very nicely and even on mishits it rolls nicely. I actually did very well with long putts with this putter, but for some reason I kept missing my short putts with it...could be all the distracting alignment aids on the putter, I switched to a anser blade style putter and I feel much more comfortable over the short to mid range putts now. It was kind of pricey when it was released but its a great putter.

We've all heard the phrase "You can't go home again",   And nowhere is it more true than in relationships and golf.   After all, there's a good reason you have certain people blocked from seeing your facebook profile.

And there's an even better reason why once you stop using a putter you sell it to some poor schmuck who has the same club buying disease you do.  You never, ever go back.  It's a rule.  It says so right on the back of my Man Card.  For good measure I wrote it on the back of my NCGA card as well.

As a self understood club ho, I bought the Spider when it first came out, expecting to play it for a few months and be done with it.  But, just like that girl you weren’t expecting to like, that darn spider turned out to have a better stroke than I was expecting.  I fell in love and bagged her.. err it, for a year. That's a record for me.

I spent a full year dropping balls in the hole and loving every minute of it.  But, like all relationships, eventually something changed.  It wasn't her, it was me.  I couldn't handle her size!  It wasn't her fault.  She was purpose built like that, but I was vain and needed more.  I wanted a skinny little beauty that worked just as well.  I also got tired of all the jokes and the oh so original "what kind of pizza is in that putter cover?" questions.  Really, does anyone think that's original?

So, in the end I gave into peer pressure and dumped my beloved for a new model.  The new model was sexy, but she didn't let me hit the hole as much and she was gone in a month.  In truth, I can't even remember her name.  After new model #1 came a dozen others, but a year later, none could fill the void left by my original love.

I pined for her ease of use.  Her ability to let me hit it straight and true whenever I wanted.  I tried to make my other putters act like her by changing their weight and balance.  I gave them tans, painted them new colors and even bought pretty head covers for them.  But once you've had a big sexy putter that feels as good as the spider, not much compares.

So, last week, when I was out trolling in GolfSmith and spotted a brand new center shafted spider for a mere $135, there was no doubt she was coming home with me.  She was sexy, cheap and just like her sold off sister, let me dent back of the cup at will.  Everything I wanted in a new relationship and more!

The high MOI, AGSI+ insert and center shaft really works for me.  She stays straight on line on the backstroke and the balls feel like butter when they come off the face.  The roll is exactly as I remember it.  It really is amazing how smooth the roll is.  It’s not just marketing. If you like inserts, the AGSI+ is, in my opinion, at least as good as the Rife face.  The Spider also allows you to put a little extra “junk in the trunk” by adding weight to her rear.  Some guys are going to like her stock weight and some like me, prefer a little more in the back.

The only down side is that you have to buy a wrench and weights for the privilege of adding that weight.  The good news is that there are now aftermarket weights that work great and can be had for 1/3 of the original vendor weights.  My girl didn’t seem to mind the fact that I was cheap and went with aftermarket weights, which is another plus for her.  The vendor wrench is still going to set you back too much money, but I’ve been told you can find one that will work just as well at your local auto store for $5.

So how was it getting back in the saddle for some real play?  I took her out on the town for the first time last week and she didn't disappoint.  Reducing my average putts by four is always a good thing and my friends noticed.  There weren’t any jokes this time because they knew I was hitting more holes than they were, and in the end, we all know that’s what really matters.

So, if hitting the hole is more important to you than the size of your putter, the spider might be just the thing you're looking for.   Be warned though.  You'll take some ridicule and abuse.  No one likes to be beaten by a guy with a fat putter.  Especially when she costs less than the trophy putters they keep missing with.

Of course I'm already oogling the spiders younger sister, the center shafted Itsy bitsy spider.  But she's a Japanese exotic and expensive, so for today, she'll have to wait.  Right now, I'm too busy enjoying being home again.

Itsy Bitsy

by MatthewT on November 17, 2009

Pros:

Great putter all around

Cons:

apparence (although its not that bad)

Rating:

This is the best putter i have ever used.   It gets the job done.  I switched from a SS NP2, and havnt putted better in my life.  The balance of the head is amazing and the putter seems to just stroke itself.  I think for next year I will extend it to 43" and try it out as a belly.

I've tried a NUMBER of putters over the last several years.  These included scotty camerons, odyssey, ping and a few taylormade putters.

I'm a decent golfer.  My handicap has been in the 1-2 range for the last several years and I've won some club matches and tournaments.  Seeing my game improve to where I could at any time shoot under par has been fun to say the least.

My putting has always suffered in competition however.  Anyone who has played competitively, for some money, or even just in their league/club championships knows that playing when the pressure is truly on is a different animal.  Its not as easy to shoot 68 when you know up front you need to do it.

The last couple of years, I've learned to control my anxiety, relax my body and slow my  breating in an effort to put a true swing on the ball, but I still was hurting on the putting greens.

Enter the Spider Center Shaft.

The Spider truly is a great putter.  The alignment makes it very easy to line up and the design of the putter makes it easy to hit on line.  Surprisingly, I had no trouble controlling speed (something that other similar putters like Futura Craz-E etc. made difficult for me) and I found myself hitting even long 30-40 foot putts with better speed than before.

The long and short of it is this putter sets up perfectly for me.  The centershaft model fits my eye, and gives me confidence over the ball.

Results in Competition

I knew this putter was a nice putter.  The true test however would come in whether or not it made any difference when the pressure was on.  We all know putters that perform on the putting green or in the shop don't necessarily perform on the course when the money is on the line.

For me the results were dramatic.  My putting became very quickly a strength in competition.  I made it to the championship of a match play tournament, winning in convincing fashion in the early rounds (one 9 hole match I won 5 and 4 behind 4 birdies in 5 holes).  My strong putting continued in the championship, although I caught an unlucky bounce on an iron shot off a sprinkler head on 17 and ended up losing by 1 down.

A few weeks later, in a big money scramble event I managed to make several putts for birdie including a 30 footer and a 45 footer which helped our team end up collecting some cash.

At the end, I'm very pleased with the Spider.  I'd encourage anyone looking for a putter they can have confidence in to give it a try.  I hit more putts on line with good tempo in my putting stroke than ever before and its made me a better putter.

Point and shoot, sorta...

by Paully on November 19, 2009

Pros:

Super easy to align.

Interchangeable weights for customization.

AGSI groove technology.

Cons:

Distance control lacking..

Smart remarks you'll get from buddies.

Rating:

After a horrendous day putting, I bought a center shafted Spider on a whim.  It felt good putting around the pro shop, so I thought, what the hey, it couldn't hurt.

I took it out on my next round, and putted so-so.  I wasn't in love.  But I thought that, like any other relationship, I had to work with it.  So I gave it a chance at the bag for a month or so.  In the end, it just wasn't for me.

Let's get to the pros.  Alignment is a breeze.  The putter frames the ball really well.  Inside 5 feet, $$$$.  The ball rolls very nice, too.  AGSI technology is no joke.  Also, even with the stock weights, it felt like it had some heft to it, which I liked.  Even if you don't like the weight, you could always change out the weights, which is a really big plus.

As for the cons, distance control was the biggest problem.  Anything outside of 20 feet, I felt zero confidence that I'd get it close.  It was more of a hit-and-pray deal.  The face was just too firm for me, it almost felt like I was putting with a driver, that's how hot it felt.  Being really good at 3 footers is pointless if you can't get it within 3 feet with your lag.  That ended up being the dealbreaker for me, and now I'm back to my trusty TP Mills.

Not bad, but nothing to rave about

  by luckydevil66613 on December 03, 2009

Pros:

Easy to align, somewhat soft insert

Cons:

Too much going on, too light

Rating:

Heard a lot about this putter so i gave it a shot. Too much going on with the head in my opinion, but was easy to align and swing on straight line. Wish it was heavier.

Rossa Monza Spider center shaft

by dgarland on July 02, 2011

Pros:
great solid feel, smooth roll

Cons:
I just couldn't make putts with it

Rating:

This is a really nice putter, solid, provides good roll, really easy to swing pendulum style.  I just couldn't make anything with it though.  I actually put this putter in the car at the turn and putter with a wedge for the rest of the round.
