A Solid Wedge
by BridgestoneRX on October 23, 2009
Pros:
Face lasts unusually long, has a nice feel.
Cons:
Heavy, overpriced
Rating:
The '08 SM wedge is a all around good wedge. Has a great feel for a cast wedge. The CNC Milling really does put spin on the ball. This finish doesn't glare and lasts. Only problem is the heaviness and the price. This wedge is HEAVY! And, is wayy overpriced. When this came out, it costed about $130+. That was wayy too much. $110 would've been perfect.
Surprisingly I was somewhat unimpressed with this oft-praised club.

Pros:
Great spin from a variety of lies. Alot of loft options.
Cons:
Not enough bounce options. No grind options. Too much bounce on the 60.
Rating:
Being a left-handed player I get less options on this club than the right handed player. I bought the 60 degree lob wedge. I was really impressed by the spin, this club enabled me to spin it back for the first time in my life. Even though the spin was great, the bounce was too great on the club. It was good out of the sand, but from those tight lies where you need to really flop it high I was having a lot of trouble. I think for this reason many players are moving over to Scratch wedges. Thankfully Titleist fixed the problems with the grinds etc. for the 09 spin milled wedge. I actually was forced to personally grind down the bounce on this wedge and now it is alot better for those tight shots off the fairway. Out of the bunker this club really stops the ball. Once you get used to very minimal roll out on most shots it really enhances the control. Due to the lack of options and poor bounce configuration on the lob wedge I had to give this club a 3, even though it has many redeeming qualities.
I know these are supposed to the the end all be all of wedges, but in the end, they're just another entry in the war. They have a ton of milling that will chew up balls at first, but after a few rounds or range sessions that subsides. For $110, they're priced right along with most other premium wedges and really are a decent choice. The feel is there, the spin is there, and the name carries confidence. I personally have switched back to clevelands, but if you like titleist you should check these out.
