Almost Perfect Ball

by hailtothethief on November 03, 2009
Pros:
-Spin Control
-Feel
Cons:
-Durability
Rating:
The Titleist ProV1x is the best player's ball around. Great if you do not desire the high spin of the ProV1 but still want the unbelieveable feel. Only complaint is that wedges just tear these to shreds, but thats to be expected I guess.

Pros:
-Low Spin
-Exceelent spin around the green
Cons:
-Scuff rather easily

I have the 07-08 model prov1x not the 09's. These are excellent balls that do what they were designed for. I especially like them around the greens, excellent spin and feel soft off the putter. No clickiness like the cally x balls.
I also like how they feel off the driver and irons. They are good in the wind and seem to hold their line overall an excellent ball. Like I mention in the "con"section they do seem to scuff easily especially with my liquid copper wedges. But since I got the ball on sale, they were bringing in the new provs I stocked up on them.

ProV1x

Pros:
Distance, short game, feel, putting
Cons:
cost, durability
Rating:
Best all around ball. Distance off the tee is superb, great feel. Shines in the short game with feel and spin, perfect feel off of the putter. Durability is so-so...but for the best all around ball experience, I can live with that

I didn't plan on buying any Pro V's this year as I was going to spend my money testing out competitive balls from Callaway, Srixon, etc... But, I won a dozen of these in the middle of the season. So when my supply of tour ix's and z-stars started to run low, I started using these. The first thing I notice is how they feel different compared to any of the previous Pro V's I've played. The Pro V's of 07-08ish seemed to spin higher, and fly longer. Perhaps this change was due to the change made with the Callaway lawsuit. Overall a good ball, that is very porpular due to it's presence on tour. I would say it is equal to the Z-Star, and just below the Callaway Tour offerings. The Tour ix is has been the best ball out the past couple of years, in my opinion... but that's another review.

Awesome ball, especially if you can afford it.

Pros:
Great spin, great feel.
More durable than the pro-v1 but still very soft on impact.
Cons:
Expensive, but it performs to it's price.

You usually don't find me purchasing a box of Pro-V1's or Pro-V1x's at the store. There are cheaper options online, but even then, I find it difficult to pay that much money for balls. However, if you look around or purchase the previous year's model, you can save a good amount of cash. Personally, I play the Pro-V1's that have "PRACTICE" stamped on them. I find them to be the same but at almost half the price.
For this review though, I used a Pro-V1x from a box that was given to me as a gift. I'm not sure how effective these reviews will be for these balls. Usually people know the name "Pro-V1" and they buy them because they know that they perform. However, I'll give my 2 cents.
Impressions:
I can't remember the first time I experienced the Pro-V1x, so instead of having an "Initial Impressions" section, I labeled it "Impressions". This ball was just as pretty as it's "spinnier" brother. I read that it was supposed to be more durable and have "less" spin, but from the outside, everything was the same.
The ball felt nice off the tee, but did not seem to be outrageously longer than other balls. I noticed lots of spin even though it had lower spin than the Pro-V1, and on bad swings, the ball would fly off to the other fairway or die in the trees.
From the fairway, the ball felt very soft. It just felt like the ball would explode off the clubface and it was like hitting a rubber ball almost. It felt great.
The ball has that buttery soft feel all the way down to the wedges. Again, I didn't notice much difference in distance, but the one hop and stop would make anyone buy this ball. On full wedge shots, it wasn't too spin crazy to where you'd spin it back a mile. It was just right.
On chip/pitch shots, it was almost like the green was magnetized. I couldn't get much forward roll out of it. So I had to basically go straight for the hole every time. If you land it near the hole, chances are you'll be at a close distance to it, which is great.
I'm not sure if you've ever putted using a "no-spin" hard as a rock bargain ball, but it's like putting a rock. You can really feel the softness of the ball when you putt the Pro-V1x. You don't really have to exaggerate your putting motion to go the distance you want. This helps you develop a feel for your distances in your putting stroke much easier.
After a round of play, the Pro-V1x was still in brand new condition. After wiping it down with a wet towel, it still looked brand new.
The Pro-V1x is an expensive ball. With expensive, comes added performance. This ball sure did perform like it was expensive. I think if you can afford it, it should be the ball to play. If it's too expensive, then there are great alternatives out there that are cheaper and will perform just as great.
Overall, I love this ball. Although maybe not from the stores, you'll always find my bag with a Pro-V1x or Pro-V1.

Pros:
control
Cons:
cost

Good control and spin. Plays well in the wind and adds a little distance with the driver. It is a little pricy at $4 a ball

Pros:
great distance, feel, and spin off the wedges
Cons:
pricey & easily scuffed
Rating:
Simply a great ball. Consitant flight off the tee and on approach shots. Doesn't spin quite as much as the ProV1 of the driver and long irons, but still has great spin on short iron and wedge shots. I've played plenty of other good balls (Srixon ZStar, Callaway HX Black, TM Penta, etc). Nice golf balls, but something just keeps me coming back to the ProV1x's. They just fit me so well.
