Ping i15 line
By Site Administrator

Reviewed by: Sandy

Picked up my i15 equipment this morning and did about a 1 1/2 hour comparison to my Rapture V2 equipment that has been in the bag all season..

I got two 8 degree drivers--one with a BB and one with the stock UST shaft. Both were the standard .5 degree open. I wanted the BB one to be 1 degree open but the equipment wasn't ready to bend them yet. Might still send it back and have that done. The appearance at address is by far the best Ping has produced to date. Now the results--both shafts worked pretty similarly. I really didn't notice the fade bias all that much. The bottom line is the Rapture V2 7.5 with a BB is still measureably longer. Both are quite accurate with maybe a slight advantage to the i15 for working the ball.. I prefer the sound of the Rapture V2. One of the i15s sounds a little more muted than I like, while the other has a better sound (club to club variation I suppose).. Trajectory is about the same as the Rapture, but I think think the Rapture may spin less (although I don't have actual data--only watching the ball). The roll is greater, but so was the carry.

Next I compared my Rapture V2 strong 3 wood to the i15 strong 3 wood. Here it was very very close with a possible edge to the i15. It's trajectory was lower than the Rapture V2 wood and it was slightly longer consistently.. It is also better out of the long grass than the Rapture..

I then compared the Rapture V2 5 wood and the i15 5 wood. The i15 is clearly better here. Longer and straighter. I had always had trouble with the Rapture 5 wood being a hook machine. The fade bias in the i15 fairway was clearly a difference maker. You can hit the ball very high if you want.

The last club was the i15 17 hybrid. This club is a rocket launcher. Maybe a little too long to know what to do with it as far as bag make up.. It is real close to the 3 wood in distance, while having a slightly higher trajectory. Probably the first hybrid since the first Adams hybrid that was workable for me..

Bottom line is Rapture V2 driver stays in the bag. i15 3 wood goes into the bag. i15 5 wood goes into the bag. i15 hybrid reserved for some yet to be determined needs.. I think I might try a 20 as it may be a better fit between a 3 wood and 3 iron..

Very good equipment but not a suprise that the Rapture driver stays in the bag.

Product Description

i15 Driver

The fade-biased design of the i15 Driver meets the needs of golfers who place a high priority on working their tee shots. The traditional pear-shaped 460cc titanium head is engineered with a bulge crown design and deeper face to optimize energy transfer for greater ball speed and the solid feel preferred by better golfers. Internal weighting reduces spin and the hosel is positioned slightly back from the face to help promote tour-preferred trajectories and control. Its titanium carbon finish provides a sleek and optically pleasing appearance.

-Three lofts: 8°, 9.5°, 11°
-Available in PING-designed TFC700D (R, S and X flexes) and UST AXIVcore Tour Red 69 (R, S and X flexes).

-U.S. MSRP: $405 (graphite shaft only)

Ping i15 Driver

This driver is the definition of soaring drivers. I did not like the stock shafts offering as they all felt lazy. If you are a Rapture V2 kind of player, don't touch this, V2 sound is better and more accurate with less spin. This driver is meant to work the ball.

Appearance grabbed everyone's attention, especially when you are on tee and they are looking. This thing looks like a bomb.

Again some might say it is easy to control but I guess it all depends on the swing speed you're hitting and the courses you're playing folks!

I liked it at first sight, so did my friends but it was like dating a dumb model :)

Not suited for the game! Maybe it's your style ;) Enjoy!

I bought this club from a fellow WRX'er with the following set-up:

8o loft and an upgraded Motore shaft and  I have to say this is a great low-spinning combo.  This set-up has a piercing trajectory that seems to stay airborne far longer than I expected.

The guys playing in my group made a number of comments on the stealthy appearance of the blacked-out face.  From address you can see that the club is square to slightly open and feel confident that the left side of the course should be marginalized.

The club also had a great sound at impact (which was commented on by my playing partners), nothing like the trashcan thuds from their drivers.

My only complaint would be slightly muted feedback - I wasn't entirely sure whether I pured it or if it was a mishit, although I have to say it was my first time on the course with the club.

8* AxivCore 69red S-flex, swing speed 110-115, I hit a nice penetrating ball that hangs a good while, usually get between 280-300 yards with a Pro V1 x, 12-14* launch, 2900-3200 spin (im not perfect).  Played the Titleist D2 before and the i15 has much better feel, look, distance and control.  Not for someone who already fades the ball, better for someone who hits a hook/draw, however if you hit a hook/draw and swing over the top, fix your swing before thinking this club will correct your problems.  No driver out there can fix the flaws of an over the top swing.  If your a single digit, who can move the ball both ways, but has more trouble with a fade, this is the driver for you.  As per comment before, the look and setup of the club gives you the confidence that you will not hit far to the left side.  I personally think this is the best driver on the market from all the major OEMs at the moment for single digit players.  g15 is an amazing driver as well, but does not give you the same work-ability, so if your not a single digit go for the g15.  Ping does it again.
